Workshop on Quantum GIS [Duration: 5 days, Date: 31 July to Aug 4 August 2011, 10:00 am - 04:00 pm]
Quantum GIS is an open source Geographic Information System that supports most geospatial vector and raster file types and database formats. Unlike many other open source GIS programs, QGIS is available for a number of operating systems, including both Windows and Mac OSX. The program offers standard GIS functionality, including a large variety of mapping features, data editing, on-the-fly projection and GRASS digitizing. Its support for plugins expands its functionality further by providing additional tools such as GPS data support, geo-referencing, and additional mapping elements. The features of QGIS are easy to work with and a simple map can be generated quickly. Quantum GIS allows you to use the GPS tools to upload or download directly to a GPS unit. You can also convert GPS formats to GPX or even import and export GPX format. Quantum GIS has many similarities including the interface and milieu with ESRI based products (which are prohibitively expensive for many of us) such as ArcView and ArcGIS but is completely free but works as good. At the end of course participants will be able to use QGIS which will increase their employability and productivity.
