Mission

Alliance for Community Capacity Building in Northeast India is a charity registered in England with the stated objective 'to develop the capacities and the skills of the members of the socially and economically disadvantaged communities of Assam state in north east India in such a way as they are better able to identify, and help meet their needs to participate more fully in society'.

The Vision

Donate through CAFOnlineOur goal is to provide opportunities for people to learn through experience - opportunities that would not otherwise readily be available to them and involve them in collective effort so that they gain confidence in their own abilities and their ability to influence decisions that affect them.

The communities in Northeast India share disadvantage beacuse of gegrphical isolation from the mainstream India. Due to its strategic geo-political location Northeast is a highly sensitive region sharing over 2,000 km of border with Bhutan, China, Myanmar and Bangladesh and connected to the rest of India by a narrow 20-km wide corridor of land.

Isolation coupled with economic backwardness despite great potential has caused much frustration among the people, particularly the youths. Today, the lack of development has become a highly emotive issue vis-à-vis Indian democracy. The region has become a fertile recruiting ground for separatist groups fighting for causes ranging from autonomy to independence.

Geographical isolation combined with extremism and, at times, fatricidal violence put the entire region in a socially and economically disadvantaged position in relation to the mainstream India.

We aim to make a positive difference to the capacity and skills of the members of the community so that  they are able to participate with  the mainstream in activities directed towards meeting their needs. Ou to empower the members of the community

  1. equipping people with skills and competencies which they would not otherwise have;
  2. realising existing skills and developing potential;
  3. promoting people’s increased self-confidence;
  4. promoting people’s ability to take responsibility for identifying and meeting their own, and other people’s, needs; and
  5. in consequence encouraging people to become involved in their community and wider society in a fuller way

We believe community capacity building directetd at communities of northeast India benefits the coutry and public in general. The increase in skills, competencies and self confidence on the part of members of the communities allowing more effective, efficient and sustainable delivery of services in addition the promotion of social cohesion within the region and the country.

Strategic Approach

We believe that strengthening the civil society and, at the individual level, empowering the members of the community with access to knowledge and information are the keys to improve opportunities for the whole community crippled by decades of insurgency and violence in India's troubled Northeast. Our strategic approach is to 'invest in people to stimulate creativity, confidence and self expression using the media of knowledge and information'

Our Current Focus: Information Communication Technology (ICT)

The current focus on ICT aims to promote the equitable deployment of knowledge and communications resources providing access to content, tools, and networks for civic empowerment and effective democratic governance. ICT delivers content, provides tools, and builds networks empowering the key civic players and community at large.

Access to knowledge in all its forms is possibly the single most important factor in determining the success or failure of civil society provided adequate economic resources and effective legal and institutional environment exist. Ability to exchange ideas, knowledge and information is the lifeblood of citizenship and participation in a shared public sphere.

While traditional media remain essential, new digital technologies hold potential for enhancing civic life that is still largely untapped.

The programme focuses on internet connectivity and technology support for civil society organisations and networks. Supporting 'open and free access' to research literature and facilitating effective citizen-government communication are other key components. As a secondary effect, the program will enhance the effectiveness of our other activities through the use of knowledge media.

The programme is not merely a technology program - its mission is social as stated in our objective. Technology is an important tool. The program will strive to use the most appropriate combination of new and traditional media as well as policy advocacy, training and institution-building to pursue this mission.
