Challenges

Northeast India is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse regions in Asia. Each of the seven states of the region has its distinct culture and tradition. Before the British the region had been politically independent but, particularly Assam, Manipur and Tripura, enjoyed cultural linkage with the main stream India from ancient time.

Home to many tribes and groups, the region is highly sensitive due to its strategic geo-political location sharing over 2,000 km of border with Bhutan, China, Myanmar (Burma) and Bangladesh. It is connected to the rest of India by a narrow 20-km wide corridor of land.

Why is north-eastern India so restive?
Isolation coupled with decades of economic backwardness despite vast potential has caused much frustration among people, particularly, the youths. Lack of development has become a highly emotive issue for the people vis-à-vis Indian democracy. The region has become a fertile recruiting ground for separatist groups fighting for right to 'self-determination' to 'independence' by violent means. Recent years have seen the growth of conflicting demands for independent homelands between various ethnic groups, which have resulted in much bloodshed as a result of ethnic clashes. The separatist find shelter in across the borders in Burma, Bangladesh and Bhutan, particularly, in the remote border hill regions.

People are living amidst terror and intimidation.

After years of bloody campaigns, people are tired and desperate for peace. Civil society groups in the region are more active than ever before. They are playing a leading role in initiating dialogues and sustaining the peace process. The central government has taken initiatives to accelerate economic development and has opened dialogues with many of these groups to politically resolve causes of grievances and conflicts.

Addressing today's challenges
To seize the opportunity arising out of government's initiatives, increased interest in the region and globalisation, the members of the community have to be able to participate actively in the process of development.

It is vital that there is a vibrant civil society with flourishing rational values allowing the members of the community to acquire skills and confidence to participate fully and effectively in all spheres of national life. The community needs to be able to influence decision making process affecting the future of the region.

Only a community with inner strength could rise up to difficult challenges, and helping the community harness its hidden potential is the key.

This exactly is what The Alliance for Community Capacity Building intends to do - help the community in the northeast to make a positive difference to its future.
